8 Steps to Financial Bliss: Small Changes, Big Impact

November 04, 20244 min read

“To live a more blissful life, we must be willing to grow beyond the habits that hold us back - one step at a time!” - Erika Dox-Martinez

Introduction:

What a powerful reminder to release what holds us back! This quote inspires me to get moving on a pillar of my life that often takes a backseat—my health. I knew I needed support and fresh insights to make a real change, so I reached out for guidance. Because hey, even coaches need coaches!

For the past 12 weeks, I’ve been on a journey of health and self-discovery with my friend and Lifestyle Medicine Coach, Melyssa Allen. I recently wrapped up her Healthy Living Doesn’t Have to Suck Book Club group coaching program, based on her inspiring book. (Noting: below I share the link to her book as well as my Commitment to My Health Journey Letter.)

Throughout this journey, I was struck by how much Melyssa’s insights about health also align with financial wellness, and I knew I had to share these takeaways with you.

Remember our health, finances, and overall well-being are deeply connected, and taking intentional steps in one area can elevate all areas of our lives, Bli$$ Seekers.

With that said, here are 8 steps to bring you closer to financial peace, bliss and abundance today:

1. Start Small to Make Big Changes 🌱

In both health and finances, small habits lead to lasting change. Whether it’s taking five minutes to stretch each day or setting aside $5 a week for savings, small, regular actions add up over time. Think of each little step as a seed—you’re growing new, positive habits that lead to abundance.

2. Stay Connected to Your Financial “Why” 🧭

When the journey feels challenging, reconnecting to your purpose can make all the difference. In wellness, it could be wanting more energy or a longer life; in finances, it might be security, freedom, or peace of mind. Write down your “why” and keep it visible to help make financial choices that align with your values.

3. Celebrate Each Win 🎉

Wellness and financial journeys aren’t just about the big milestones; the small wins matter too. Did you add even a few dollars to your savings, or resist an impulse buy? Celebrate! Acknowledging small victories is a powerful motivator and reinforces a positive mindset.

4. Enjoy the Journey, Not Just the Destination 🛤️

With both health and finances, the journey is as rewarding as the destination. Progress isn’t only about hitting milestones; it’s about building new habits and feeling more in control of your choices. If you focus only on the end goal, it can feel overwhelming. Instead, celebrate the progress you’re making along the way.

5. Lean on Your Strengths and Past Wins 💪

Reflect on moments when you made positive financial choices or used discipline to achieve a wellness goal. Tap into those strengths to build confidence for new goals. Reminding yourself of these successes builds self-confidence and helps you repeat them with intention.

6. Embrace the Emotions That Come with Money 🧘

Money can bring up many emotions, just like a wellness journey does. It’s okay to feel a range of emotions—from pride and joy to guilt or frustration. Allow yourself to experience these feelings without judgment. This emotional awareness is part of making choices that honor your values.

7. Don't Believe Everything You Think 🧠

Negative self-talk happens in all areas of life - “I’m not good with money” is no different from thinking, “I’ll never get in shape.” When these thoughts creep in, remember they’re just thoughts, not truths. Small actions like saving a few dollars can shift your mindset and rewrite old beliefs.

8. Ask Yourself: “What’s One Small Step I Can Take Today?” 👣

On days when motivation dips, just focus on one small step forward. It could be reviewing one spending category, saving an extra dollar, or even just reading up on a financial topic. Each small action brings you closer to financial bliss, and you’ll feel more empowered with each step.

Closing:

Financial wellness, like healthy living, is all about taking small, meaningful steps toward the life you truly want.

Remember, just like health, financial peace and abundance are a journey—and you don’t have to go it alone.
